While Minimalism is about living with less, there’s more to the practice than just decluttering. These 5 tips to help you practice Minimalism in your life will help you to live the clutter-free and put Minimalism into practice in ways you might not have considered.
1) Turn Off the TV
Have you ever thought about how much time you spend watching television during your day? While things clutter up your home, time-wasters like television and surfing the internet eat up your daylight hours and monopolize your time. Take back control over your life by minimizing the amount of time you spend watching television or surfing the internet. When you take back your time, you will have opportunities to do things that truly add value to your life–like spending time with friends and family or exercising.
2) Go On a Shopping Ban
Aside from food, how much of your money is spent on items that you’ve purchased because you were bored or because you “earned it”, only to have those items take up space in your home later when they’re inevitably forgotten? Make yourself a goal to only purchase items that you need or that make you truly happy. Avoid the shopping mall and stay off of the online marketplaces. Try the shopping ban for a month and see how much money you save. You can even hide your credit cards from yourself for a month. Even better, give yourself a goal to achieve with your saved money–like a vacation or time doing fun events with family. Not only will you be saving money, but you’ll be working towards a goal in the future that will bring you happiness and fantastic memories.
3) Get Rid of Clutter
Getting rid of clutter is what most people think of when they hear about Minimalism, but it’s more than that. Minimalism really means living with what you need and what brings you happiness, so for this tip, really take a look at what you’ve decided to fill your home with. Do you have mementos from traveling that make you happy when you see them? Or items that are the source of happy memories? Then they’re not clutter. Alternatively, do you have a huge book collection that you’ve never read, but a few classics that you always return to? Then it’s time to get rid of the extra weight. Think of Minimalism as letting go of extra weight that holds you down under the pressure of societal expectations. Let go of the items that fill your house but don’t serve any purpose. Instead, fill your life and your home with things that matter.
4) Raid Your Closet and Do Some Donating
So much of what people have in their closets won’t ever leave the hanger. If you are a clothing collector, it might be time to take a look at what you own and get rid of what you aren’t using. Separate your clothing into two piles–what you wear and what you’ve never worn. Take a look at the never worn pile. Does any of it make you happy, or does it just make you feel guilty? If you don’t get any value from the clothing you haven’t worn (or haven’t worn in a long time) then let it go. Pass those clothes on to someone else who could really use them, like a thrift store or a donation bank. You will bring happiness to someone else’s life through your practicing Minimalism, which can bring you happiness as well.
5) Avoid Emotional Hoarding
Many individuals collect items throughout their lives that don’t have meaning aside from the fact that they were given to them by someone they love, and they don’t want to hurt that person by getting rid of it. But this is a silly way to live. If you are keeping something only to make someone else happy, then you are living your life according to the expectations of others. Minimalism frees you to live the life that you want, free from the emotional and physical hang-ups that can drag you down. You can be thankful that they bought you the gift, but if you’ve had it in a closet for six years, it’s time to pass it on to someone else (or throw it in the trash).
